The episclera is a thin layer that cover the white part of the eye (sclera). Episcleritis is an irritation and inflammation of the episclera, the cause is usually unknown (idiopathic) or may occur with other conditions such as herpes zoster, rheumatoid arthritis or Sjogren syndrome.
